Cape Town & Johannesburg, May 2025 — “It’s not just about technology. It’s about trust, curiosity, and building something together,” said Mr. Thomas Van Heugen, one of the Walloon delegates, as he reflected on a week that brought two innovation ecosystems closer.
From 5 to 9 May 2025, Awex in South Africa, in collaboration with hub.brussels, led a dynamic Digital Economic Mission to South Africa. Stretching from Cape Town to Johannesburg, the mission brought together digital companies, policymakers, and ecosystem builders — all driven by a common purpose: to connect, collaborate, and create.
From Handshakes to Synergies
The week began in Cape Town, where Belgium’s Consul General, Mr. Nicolas Fierens Gevaert, spoke of the spirit of shared purpose — in trade, in innovation, and in vision.
That sense of shared ambition carried through the week — especially in the one-on-one meetings, animated exchanges, and conversations between Walloon innovators and their South African counterparts. From e-health and AI to smart mobility and data solutions, companies explored synergies grounded not just in technology, but in shared purpose.
Throughout the mission, Walloon firms actively engaged with South African businesses, government officials, and ecosystem leaders, turning each encounter into a space for genuine dialogue —about values, vision, and long-term collaboration.
“We are here to forge long-term, meaningful partnerships,” added Mrs Catherine Bauwens, AWEX’s Trade and Investment Commissioner in Johannesburg.
The mission continued in Johannesburg with a seminar hosted at GIBS Business School, where Ambassador Paul Jansen reinforced the strategic depth of the Belgium–South Africa partnership.
One South African tech founder described the event as “purpose driven”.
Planting Seeds for Tomorrow
As the mission drew to a close, it left behind more than a trail of business cards. It sparked genuine conversations, new partnerships, and shared ambitions.
AWEX extends its sincere gratitude to all participants, partners, and hosts who contributed to the mission’s success. As digital transformation accelerates, Wallonia and South Africa are building bridges rooted in mutual respect and a shared digital future.
